Weighing the "heaviest" Polya urn
نویسنده
چکیده
For the classical Polya urn model parametrized by exponent γ, the limit distributions of the fraction of balls in each bin are simple and well known when γ < 1 (“egalitarian”) and when γ > 1 (“winner takes all”). In this note, we partially fill in the gap for γ = 1, the critical point, by providing explicit analytical expressions for all the moments of the limit distribution of the fraction of balls in the bin with the most balls. c © Jeremy Chen 2014; Last Updated: June 25, 2014

A note on the rechargeable Polya urn scheme
A very simple specific case of a Polya urn scheme is as follows. At each trial one draws a ball from an urn with balls of two different colours. Then, one looks at the ball, and returns the ball to the urn together with another ball of the same colour. Then one makes another draw. Et cetera. At the first draw there is one ball of each colour. The rechargeable Polya urn scheme is essentially the...
متن کاملThe Polya Urn Process and the Stochastic Approximation of Its Behavior
This paper begins by describing the Polya urn process. Next, distributions of ball counts and ball proportions are derived. These derivations should provide the reader with an understanding of how urn processes behave. After this intuition is developed, a stochastic approximation of the process is derived. This way, the relationship between the stochastic results and the previously derived resu...
متن کاملBranches in random recursive k-ary trees
In this paper, using generalized {polya} urn models we find the expected value of the size of a branch in recursive $k$-ary trees. We also find the expectation of the number of nodes of a given outdegree in a branch of such trees.
متن کاملGeneralized Polya Urn for Time-varying Dirichlet Process Mixtures
Dirichlet Process Mixtures (DPMs) are a popular class of statistical models to perform density estimation and clustering. However, when the data available have a distribution evolving over time, such models are inadequate. We introduce here a class of timevarying DPMs which ensures that at each time step the random distribution follows a DPM model. Our model relies on an intuitive and simple ge...
متن کاملSelf Organization of Interacting Polya Urns
We introduce a simple model which shows non-trivial self organized critical properties. The model describes a system of interacting units, modelled by Polya urns, subject to perturbations and which occasionally break down. Three equivalent formulations stochastic, quenched and deterministic are shown to reproduce the same dynamics. Among the novel features of the model are a non-homogeneous sta...
